Will installing a tankless water heater save space as opposed to a tank-type water heater?

Yes, one of the main benefits of a tankless water heater is its size.  The average tankless water heater is the size of a suitcase and weighs 90 pounds.

Can I install a tankless water heater myself?

Unless you are a licensed plumber and gas fitter, you should NOT try to install a tankless water heater.  Tankless water heaters are complex to install and potentially dangerous if installed wrong.  In addition, incorrect installation and/or installations by an unqualified person will probably void the manufacturer’s warranty.

Where in my home can I install a tankless water heater?

Tankless water heaters can be installed anywhere in the home where there is sufficient oxygen for the combustion process and adequate venting of the heater’s exhaust.  Except for homes in freezing climates, tankless water heaters can be installed on the exterior of the home.

Are there any special considerations that I need to take into account when installing a tankless water heater?

Yes. The main consideration for tankless water heaters is size of the gas line connecting to the heater. Since tankless water heaters heat water instantly, they require a more powerful heating system to heat the water quicker.  This more powerful heating system requires having a larger gas line than most tank-type water heaters require, meaning most tankless water heater installs require expanding the gas line running to the heater.

Will I have instantly hot water if I install a tankless water heater in my home?

No, while tankless water heaters instantly heat water, it will take a moment for the hot water to reach your sink, shower, etc. just like a tank-type water heater.

Are there any incentives/tax breaks for installing a tankless water heater?

Depending on the model, there is a federal tax incentive of up to $300 off the total cost of the installation (please consult your tax professional for full details). PG&E does not offer any rebates for installing tankless water heaters.

How long do tankless water heaters last?

Tankless water heaters typically last 15 to 20 years, compared to 10 years or less for a tank-type water heater.  If there are very hard water conditions, water treatment will be important in maintaining the life of the water heater.

Do I need a permit to install a tankless water heater?

Yes, tankless water heaters require permits. All Valley Plumbing helps its customers by starting the permit application process for the customer, only charging the customer the actual price of the permit with NO markup!  All Valley Plumbing will fill out the application, pay the permit fee, and have the permit sent to your home.  The customer will then contact the phone number indicated on the permit for an inspection and have the inspector sign the permit once the installation passes.

Can I install a tankless water heater if I have hard water?

In areas that do not have hard water, a water treatment system is not required.  In areas that do have hard water, installing a water softener or de-scaling device in the water line before the heater is recommended and will help extend the life of the heater and time between servicing.
